Thabi-Thabi × Rousseau Mosebi Foundation

Good work, done where it is needed most

Thabi-Thabi partners with the Rousseau Mosebi Foundation NPC to turn corporate social investment into schools that work, children with dignity, and communities that can carry themselves.

Who they are

A foundation built for the long game

The Rousseau Mosebi Foundation is a South African Non-Profit Company delivering on behalf of communities, partners, donors and corporate CSI departments — an integrated service covering consultancy, research, due diligence, implementation, project management and communications.

Their strategy is centred on people. Not once-off donations that photograph well and disappear, but sustainable solutions that build resilience into a community and leave something standing — what they call lasting legacies.

For Thabi-Thabi, the partnership is a natural one. We supply the schools; the Foundation makes sure the schools that need it most are the ones that get reached.

Focus areas

Six areas of involvement

Every community has its own needs, so every project gets its own approach. These are the areas the Foundation works in.

1

Early Childhood Development

The foundation years decide everything that follows. The Foundation strengthens ECD centres and Grade R classrooms so that numeracy and literacy start where they should — at the beginning.

2

Basic Education & STEM

South African learners perform below par in Maths and Science. Science labs get renovated, learning material gets supplied, and the tuition programmes that lift those results get backed.

3

Skills Development

School leavers walk into a stagnant job market short on “soft skills” and experience. Technical training, competitions and mentorship help close that gap.

4

Enterprise Development

Local contractors and small businesses are appointed on projects and supported with stock, tools, PPE and branding — especially youth- and women-owned enterprises.

5

Food Security

Soup kitchens, food parcels and festive-season campaigns for households, school orphans and the elderly in the communities where we work.

6

Social Housing

South Africa’s housing crisis hits households earning between R1 850 and R22 000 a month hardest. Social housing is part of the long-term answer.

Children & Dignity

“Walking Towards A Bright Future”

A child without shoes does not learn the same way. The School Shoes Campaign, run with the Department of Education, puts proper shoes, uniform and school bags on learners who would otherwise go without — and with them, the confidence to show up.

One of the learners photographed for the campaign put it plainly: “When I grow up, I am going to be a doctor and heal all the sick children.”

Schools & Infrastructure

Restoring dignity, one ablution block at a time

Dirty school toilets fail our children. Poor sanitation is one of the biggest issues facing rural and township schools, and it is almost always a resource problem rather than a will problem.

At Western Holdings Primary School, Harmony Gold Mining answered the call from the Lejweleputswa District Municipality. Thabi-Thabi Construction was appointed to do the work: plastering, floor repairs, carpentry, roofing, painting, plumbing, glazing, electrical and steelwork. At the handover, the stakeholders said what mattered most — dignity had been restored for the learners.

Grade R classrooms worth walking into

A dull classroom with broken windows and peeling paint teaches its own lesson. Crèche, Grade R and Foundation Phase classrooms are renovated end to end — concept design, painting, carpentry, joinery and fitting — and fitted out with educational toys and learning material.

The work has reached Boliba Primary School, and farm schools such as Summerville Primary near Bultfontein, where resources are stretched thinnest.

STEM

A science lab brought back to life

Research is consistent: countries with strong STEM capital are more competitive and grow faster. That starts with a laboratory a learner actually wants to work in.

The refurbishment of the science laboratory at Leseding Technical School in Thabong was commissioned to support STEM teaching, and delivered by Thabi-Thabi as appointed contractor. Harmony’s Regional General Manager, Mr Francois van Rensburg, and the Education Department officially handed the facility back to the school.

Maths & Science

Backing the Kutlwanong programme

Kutlwanong, the Centre for Maths, Science and Technology, provides tuition that lifts the Maths and Science results of township and rural learners — opening the door to university and professional careers.

Harmony Gold Mining is a major partner and donor, contributing funding, learning material, laptops and scientific calculators. Thabi-Thabi supplies the branded Motivation Packs handed to Grade 11 and 12 learners: a backpack, notebook, water bottle, snack pack and a flash drive loaded with life-skills and motivational material.

Where technical schools compete

Sasol was the main sponsor of the Technical Schools Competition in the Lejweleputswa Education District, held at Lenakeng and HTS schools. Learners test real trade skills against each other — fitting, turning, welding, motor mechanics — the skills the economy is actually short of.

Community Outreach

Kanaledi Disability Centre

Children living with disability in South Africa are short-changed — on inclusive education, on skills, and on the data that would show how badly they are being failed.

Kanaledi is a home for disabled children at Reahola Village. The Foundation partnered with the Strictly Bikers Crew and donated food, blankets and educational toys.

Advocacy

Walking against gender-based violence

The Foundation, Thabi-Thabi Co. and Dr Mosebi Inc. were main sponsors of a community walk against domestic violence — an awareness campaign that put the issue on the street rather than in a boardroom.

June 16, Mandela Day, and the festive season

The June 16 Charity Run is a collaboration between the Strictly Biking Crew, Ride With Me, Harmony Gold and the Foundation — distributing food parcels, face masks and blankets.

On Nelson Mandela International Day, 18 July, the Foundation partners with local organisations to set up soup kitchens, hand out food parcels and donate school shoes, uniforms, bags and educational toys.

The Festive Season Campaign, run with the Tourism Department, gives back to those in need and supports local entrepreneurs with stock, tools, PPE and branding vouchers — and helps them formalise and stay compliant.

Career Day, Women’s Day and the Mining Indaba

The Career Day Jamboree in Thabong exposes learners to career options and brings government services to them — learners without IDs and birth certificates are assisted on the day, health assessments included. The Foundation and Thabi-Thabi sponsored catering and donated school shoes.

For the 60th anniversary of National Women’s Day, the national office of the Department of Basic Education invited girl-learners from across the Free State to a workshop in Welkom, with the Foundation as a sponsor.

In February 2024 the Foundation was invited to the Mining Indaba in Cape Town, where CSI and lasting-legacy programmes for host communities are put in front of the industry.

How it gets done

Local contractors, local jobs

Projects are not flown in. Local contractors are appointed and local artisans are put to work, so that a school renovation also becomes enterprise development in the same township.

  • Classroom renovations and Grade R make-overs
  • School toilet repairs and handover ceremonies
  • Science lab and workshop refurbishment
  • School uniform, shoes and bag donations
  • Educational toys and learning material
  • Food parcels and soup kitchens
  • Support for youth- and women-owned businesses
  • Career guidance and learner well-being events
